What's the most ridiculous historical inaccuracy you've ever picked up on in a film or book?
I'm not on about stuff which is obvious poetic license like Django Unchained or 300. I mean stuff that is presented as reality or truth which is basically full of complete bollocks.

I think the biggest one I can think of off the top of my head is U-571. The US navy apparently capturing the Enigma machine 7 months before they even entered the war. Bit of a kick in the bollocks for the actual British sailors surely.

Any more?

Mel Gibson's The Patriot:

British troops burning down a church with civilians locked inside.

Never happened and a disgraceful twist of history as the only known case was actually the Nazis in occupied France

That bit in Pearl Harbour when the siren sounds before the attack and an airman on the field declares 'world war 2 has just begun!'

I read once that the bloke it was based on's main source of income was slave trading. I've not seen it all the way through but as far as I can remember that part wasn't mentioned.

Mashed

Yep, that is a good point, Gibson's character was in reality a slave owner but the film portrays all the blacks happily gardening or sweetly picking apples.

A recent episode of Grantchester set in 1953 I'll have you know, had someone working on a Morris Minor sporting a Rose Taupe paint job!

As anybody can tell you this particular colour wasn't introduced until 1961! Wankers!

I am a bit of a nerd too and i find the opening battle in Gladiator between the Romans and the Germanic tribe annoying as it has them fighting in a mass brawl whereas in reality the Roman legionnaires would form a line and not break rank.

Didn't see it but that Granchester also tried to pretend Lower Marsh Street behind Waterloo station is in Soho.

Gallipoli, where the British were apparently sitting on the beach drinking tea, whereas they were, at that point, getting slaughtered.

Mel Gibson seems to feature in a few of these.
